change is now an undeniable truth with extraordinary
consequences, already catastrophic in some
areas. The effect of too much carbon dioxide
and other greenhouse gases in the air is
warming the earth, causing record breaking
storms, droughts, and rising sea levels
that will gradually overtake coastal areas.
A radical transformation in the way energy
and materials are produced and used, transportation
is designed, and communities are built will
be the legacy of our time. Every consumer
and lifestyle choice that is made, from
choosing office supplies to supporting public
transportation, helps to slow the rate of
global warming.
The Merck Family Fund is serious about its
own practices and wants to support grantees
and applicants in their efforts. As a first
step, we are passing on information. Each

to give you a quick understanding of the
issue and what you can do. Let us know what
you think and if there are links that you
know of that can add value.
If you are applying to the Fund for a grant,
we want to know what you are doing and considering
even if this is very new to you. It may
be as simple as changing your purchasing
decisions or sharing with us what you do
already. We may try to offset your emissions
as part of an accepted grant (see Grant
Guidelines for details). As this
is a new step and approach for the Fund,
we welcome your feedback and suggestions.
